Friday Free For All: DIY Dishwasher Rinse Aid

Today marks the first day of Spring – woo hoo (apologies to those on the East Coast who apparently are still in the firm grip of Winter).  Today is also the inaugural post in a new series of quick tips on A Reinvented Mom – Friday Free For All.  The Friday Free For All series will cover a wide variety of topics, each designed to save you time and/or money.  My first post in this series is DIY Dishwasher Rinse Aid.

I have really hard water, and found that I needed to use a rinse aid, in addition to LemiShine, to achieve sparkling dishes.  The cost of these 2 products was about $12-15 per month – just for dishwasher rinse aid!  I don’t know about you, but that’s ridiculous.

Enter DIY Dishwasher Rinse Aid.  You can achieve sparkling dishes for as little as a couple of bucks a month.  I purchase the large jug (1.32 gallons) of Heinz vinegar at Costco for a little over $3.  I use vinegar quite a bit, so the large bottle works well for me.  Feel free to purchase a smaller size if you lack storage space or don’t live near a warehouse store.  You will still save a considerable amount of money compared to purchasing commercial rinse aids.  And you have the added benefit of using a natural product instead of chemical rinse aids.

So, let’s get on to the Friday Free For All tip, shall we?

DIRECTIONS:
1.  Load your dishwasher.
2. Pour about 1/4 cup of white vinegar into the dishwasher tub.
3. Add detergent and start the dishwasher, per your manufacturer’s recommendations.

NOTE:  Adjust the amount of vinegar if needed (less for softer water, more for really hard water).
