Serve these colorful chocolate dipped sandwich cookies for an easy and festive dessert at your patriotic parties. Coated in red, white and blue and dusted with sprinkles, they're the perfect treat for summer BBQs, 4th of July and Memorial Day parties.
Line baking trays with parchment paper and set aside.
To Make Blue Coated Oreos with Sprinkles
Melt 3/4 of the package of blue wafers in a double boiler over low heat or in a microwave-safe bowl in 30 second increments, stirring after each interval, until the chocolate is smooth.
Place a cookie on a fork or a dipping tool and submerge it fully into the melted blue coating. Carefully lift it out of the chocolate and gently tap it on the edge of the bowl to remove the excess coating. Place the cookie on the prepared baking tray and immediately top with white sprinkles. Repeat with 8-10 more cookies. Place the tray in the refrigerator until the coating is set.
To Make Red Coated Oreos with Stripes
Following the directions above, melt the red wafers, stirring occasionally until smooth.
Dip a cookie into the melted red coating, and tap on the side of the bowl to remove any excess coating. Place the cookie on the lined baking tray. Repeat with 8-10 more cookies, leaving about 1-2 inches apart when placing them on the tray.
Place about a 1/4 cup of the white chocolate wafers in a small piping bag. Melt in the microwave on a low power setting, in 30 second intervals. Massage the bag between heating cycle to ensure it heats evenly. Snip off a small piece from the tip of the bag and drizzle lines over the red-coated Oreos. Place the tray in the refrigerator for the coating to set.
To Make White Coated Oreos with Sprinkles
Melt white chocolate wafers according to directions above.
Using a fork or dipping tool, fully submerge a cookie into the melted white chocolate. Carefully lift it out and gently tap on the edge of the bowl to remove any excess coating. Place the coated cookie on the lined baking tray and immediately sprinkle with the red, white, and blue nonpareils. Repeat with the remaining cookies and then transfer the tray to the refrigerator for the coating to set.
Notes
Make sure you use low heat to melt the wafers to keep the chocolate from seizing or becoming thick.
If your Wilton candy melts are too thick, you can add 1-2 teaspoons of vegetable shortening to 12 ounces of wafers to thin it out. Never add water!
You can use any type of Oreos like Golden, regular, Double Stuf, or Mega Stuf varieties. Or try using flavored Oreos like birthday cake and lemon for a fun twist.
