How to Make Stars and Stripes Oreo Cookies
First, line three cookie sheet pans with parchment paper and set aside for later.
Blue Independence Day Oreos Directions
Using a double boiler on low heat, melt about 3/4 of the blue melting wafers. Stir wafers occasionally until smooth. Alternatively, you can melt wafers in a microwave-safe bowl using 30-second increments. Stir between each heating cycle.
Once the chocolate is ready, dip an Oreo cookie into the melted chocolate. Using a fork or chocolate dipping tool to dip the cookie and lift it out will make this task easy.
Finally, place the coated Oreo on the prepared baking tray and top with white sprinkles. Repeat this step with several more Oreos. Place the tray of cookies in the refrigerator to set.
Then you’re ready to make red and white striped American flag Oreos!
Directions for Red Patriotic Oreos
Melt the red candy melts using the method described above.
When the chocolate is melted, place an Oreo on a fork and dip it completely in the red chocolate. Lift the cookie out gently and tap to remove the excess coating. Place the chocolate-covered cookie gently on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with 8-10 more Oreos.
Next, melt 1/4 cup of the white chocolate wafers in a microwave-safe piping bag on a low setting for 30-second intervals. Every 30 seconds, massage the bag gently to ensure the wafers melt evenly. Use the piping bag to drizzle stripes over the red chocolate Oreos. Place the tray in the fridge to set the chocolate.
White Chocolate Oreos Directions
To create white coated cookies with festive red, white, and blue sprinkles, melt the remaining white wafers.
Dip each sandwich cookie carefully into the melted white chocolate until fully covered. Lift the cookie out gently. Then, place it on a prepared baking tray and immediately top it with patriotic sprinkles. Repeat with 10 more cookies and place the tray in the fridge to set.
Tips for Making Patriotic Fourth of July Oreos
- For best results, use a good quality chocolate to create a shiny, smooth finish on the chocolate-covered cookies.
- Never add water to melting wafers! Instead try adding 1 to 2 teaspoons of vegetable shortening or coconut oil to thin chocolate that has gotten too thick.
- Allow the coated cookies to cool and harden for at least 15 minutes. If you want to add another layer of chocolate, wait for the first layer to set up before proceeding.
- Place a piece of parchment paper under the dipping bowl for easy cleanup.
- Tap the dipped cookies on the side of the bowl gently to remove excess chocolate and for a smooth and shiny coating.
Substitutions & Variations for Chocolate Covered Cookies
There are so many different ways to make chocolate-dipped cookies, which makes them a great choice for other holidays and celebrations.
- Cookie options: try regular Oreos, Thins, or Mega Stuf varieties. You could even experiment with different brands of sandwich cookies.
- Cookie flavor options: I love changing up the flavors to match the holiday or event. Try lemon flavored cookies for a refreshing Spring treat, birthday cake is great for parties and Golden Oreos are perfect for just about any occasion.
- Color options: using different candy wafer colors can make this dipped Oreo recipe a hit for any celebration. Or try dark or milk chocolate for a classic version. Check out my Valentine’s Day Oreo Pops for an adorable sweetheart variation.
What to serve with Patriotic Fourth of July Oreos
I think these chocolate-dipped cookies are best served with a tall glass of milk. Because who doesn’t love Oreos and milk?
And this easy treat pairs well with my Red, White, and Blue Dessert Board. It’s a gorgeous way to dress up your Fourth of July table with tasty treats your guests will love.
Can I make this dish ahead of time?
Yes! This recipe can be made 7 to 10 days in advance. You’ll want to store the cookies in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
How to Store Leftover Chocolate-Covered Oreos
Place chocolate dipped cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for 7-10 days or in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. To keep the chocolate from melting, I recommend refrigerating the cookies during warmer weather.
