What Does No Churn Ice Cream Mean?
If you’ve never made homemade ice cream, typically you would need an ice cream maker. One that you churn by hand or an electric version.
The churning against ice cubes and dry ice is what makes the ingredients harden up to make ice cream.
You may be wondering how it is even possible to make ice cream without churning it. But you can, and itโs super easy!
How long does it take to make no churn ice cream?
The longest part of the process is waiting for it to freeze. That part takes at least 4 hours, but it’s best when frozen overnight.
Other than that, it only takes a few minutes after your gadgets are chilled to โmakeโ ice cream.
Ingredients for Valentineโs Ice Cream
- Heavy whipping cream
- Condensed sweetened milk
- Vanilla
- Neon Pink gel food coloring – you can use other colors if you like. Just a heads-up red is a tough color to achieve – it usually takes a lot of red gel and it still may come out pink.
- Valentineโs Day sprinkles
- Cones for serving – I like to use sugar cones but cake cones are good too
Other Gadgets Needed:
- Bread pan – to freeze the ice cream in
- Ice cream scooper – You probably already know this, but you should have an ice cream scoop on hand to keep from bending the handles on your good spoons.
- Mixing bowl – you’ll need two
- Electric mixer – you do not want to mix homemade ice cream by hand, trust me!

How to Make Ice Cream for Valentines Day
Freeze your mixing bowl, loaf pan, and beaters for at least 15 minutes before starting.
Then take them out of the freezer, add the whipping cream to the bowl and mix on High with an electric mixer until it begins to thicken up.
Beat in the sweetened condensed milk and vanilla extract.
Separate the mixture in half, adding half to a second bowl.
Squeeze pink food coloring into one bowl and stir until the cream mixture reaches your desired color.
Pour the mixture from both bowls into the loaf pan, using a knife to swirl for a marbled look.
Decorate the top with sprinkles and freeze.
Tips for Making No Churn Ice Cream
- Freeze your loaf pan, mixing bowl, and mixing beaters before starting. This makes the process easier and helps the ice cream mixture thicken faster.
- Line your loaf pan with parchment paper if desired – it makes it easier to transfer the ice cream to a freezer container for longer storage.
- If you are adding additional ingredients such as nuts or candies make sure they are chopped in small pieces. This makes it easier to eat because once they are frozen they become hard as rocks.
- Donโt overdo it on the extract if you substitute the vanilla. Some extracts, like mint, can be very overpowering even in small amounts.
Homemade No Churn Ice Cream Serving & Add In Suggestions
If you want to jazz up your ice cream, be sure to load it down with toppings or pile it high in a waffle cone or make your own waffle bowls. You can also use these as add-ins if you prefer.
- Syrups – chocolate, butterscotch, caramel
- Chopped nuts – pecans and walnuts work well with most flavors
- Hot fudge sauce
- Candy
- Crumbled cookies
- Whipped cream
- Fruit
- Chocolate chips
Variations for Holidays and Occasions
One of the reasons I love this no churn ice cream recipe is that it is sooo easy to adapt for other holidays and occasions. Here are a few of our favorite adaptations:
- St. Patrick’s Day – top a green ice cream with gummy rainbows and milk chocolate coins.
- Easter – use pastel gel colors for the ice cream and top with Easter or Spring themed sprinkles.
- Fourth of July – you can go a couple directions for patriotic holidays:
- Make a vanilla based ice cream and top with red, white and blue sprinkles.
- Make a marbled ice cream using red, white and blue coloring and top with patriotic sprinkles.
- Halloween
- Create an orange colored base ice cream and top with edible spiders and bats.
- Decorate a vanilla based ice cream with blood (red gel coloring) and edible eyeballs candy.
- Christmas – top with Christmas themed sprinkles
- Birthdays – add cake batter flavoring to your ice cream base and top with sprinkles or crushed cookies.
Ice Cream Storage Instructions
No churn ice cream will last for a month in the freezer if it is stored properly.
- Make sure it is covered and sealed as tightly as possible to prevent freezer burn.
- Storing in the back of the freezer is best because itโs less susceptible to warm air when you open and close the freezer on a regular basis.
- If you line the pan with parchment paper before starting, you can easily transfer the ice cream to an airtight storage container.
Hosting a Valentine’s Day Ice Cream Party
This is a fantastic idea and is super easy. Cover your table with a tablecloth and set up ice cream bowls, cones, spoons and napkins at one end.
Next add various-sized bowls to place your toppings in. We like to include cherry sauce and a variety of syrups in addition to sprinkles and nuts.
Keep your ice cream frozen until you are ready to serve.
Jazz up the decor by grabbing some Valentineโs day banners and festive napkins.
Use candy hearts as table decorations or toppings.
Serve the ice cream in fancy glasses, or at least the ones that look fancy but are plastic. Those are best for younger kids and if they are disposable cleanup is a breeze.
