How to make Strawberry Jello Pie with Cool Whip
Place the gelatin in a large bowl and add the boiling water, stirring until it’s dissolved.
Add ice cubes to the cold water then add the ice water to the bowl. Stir until the jello mixture has thickened, removing any unmelted ice cubes.
Add the Cool Whip and whisk it in until it’s blended.
Stir in the strawberries.
Refrigerate pie filling mixture for 20-30 minutes.
Remove filling from the frig and spoon it into the prepared pie crust, lightly smoothing the top. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for 6 hours or overnight.
Garnish the top of the pie as desired before serving.
Tips for Making Jell-o Pie with Cool Whip
- Make sure to thaw the whipped topping before starting.
- Swap out for a chocolate graham crust and drizzle pie slices with homemade chocolate syrup for a decadent chocolate covered strawberry flavored dessert.
- While I haven’t made this recipe with sugar-free gelatin, it should work. If you give it a try I’d love to hear how it turned out.
- Remember this pie will need to chill for at least 6 hours before serving.
- Garnish pie slices with additional berries or whipped topping.
Do I have to use a homemade graham cracker crust?
While I love making a homemade graham cracker crust when I can, it’s not necessary with this recipe. The larger ready-made graham cracker crusts in stores are perfect for this type of pie.
If you want ideas for using your extra store-bought graham cracker crust, check out one these no bake dessert recipes:
PRO TIP: Stock up on ready-made crusts when they are on sale during the holiday baking season rolls around. They freeze well and are shelf stable, some for up to a year after purchase. Check the expiration date and stock your cabinet to always have one on hand.
Can I use whipped cream instead of whipped topping?
While this pie is traditionally made with whipped topping (or Cool Whip, specifically), it can be made with whipped cream.
You need to keep in mind that freshly whipped cream will deflate easier than whipped topping. So when folding it into the gelatin mixture, you will want to do it by hand, gently mixing the filling so it doesn’t settle and look flat or become too watery in the pie crust.
What other flavors of Jello Cool Whip Pie can I make?
One of the best things about this recipe is that it truly works with any Jell-o flavor! While I like this one the best due to the added fresh berries, you can make a pie with any fruit flavor you prefer. Below are some fun combinations to try:
- Black Cherry with diced cherries
- Blueberry Fusion with blueberries and blackberries
- Watermelon with pineapple or coconut
- Lime with mandarin oranges, pineapple, or cherries
- Orange with mandarin oranges
- Cherry Limeade with maraschino cherries
- Fruit Punch with pineapple, peaches, or pears
- Strawberry-Banana with strawberry and banana slices
- Concord Grape with diced pears
Can strawberry cream pie be frozen?
Yes! While you don’t have to freeze it before serving, I love the texture of this quick jello pie when frozen. I’ve been known to make a few of these and keep one in the freezer for a fast and easy dessert.
Just wrap it well with plastic wrap and don’t forget to label it with the name and date it was made. The pie will keep for up to 1 month in the freezer.
How to store leftover strawberry jell-o pie
If you have leftovers, tightly wrap the pie pan with plastic wrap or foil and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It’s best to eat it as quickly as you can because the fresh fruit will start to break down over time, making the filling watery.
