When my children were younger, we always kicked off the month of October with not so spooky Disney movies and festive games on the weekends. Then we added a dinner tradition before they went trick or treating – Mummy Dogs with macaroni and cheese.
Even though hotdogs may seem like a kiddy food, they are an easy option when it comes to serving hungry tweens and teens or a crowd. Instead of using traditional buns, mummy dogs are made with crescent rolls – and boy are they delicious.
And cooking them in the air fryer makes this recipe even easier! The air fryer is the easiest way to cook hot dogs and Italian sausage.
Ingredients Needed
- hot dogs
- crescent rolls
- candy eyeballs – optional
How to Make Air Fryer Mummy Dogs
Take the hotdogs out of the pack and dry them off, then set aside.
Unroll the crescent dough, but donโt separate the rolls. Instead pinch together the perforations so they seal and make a single sheet of dough. Sandwich the dough between two pieces of parchment paper and roll flat so itโs โ inch thick.
Use a pizza cutter or knife to cut the dough into strips, varying the width of the strips.
Wrap each hot dog with dough strips to look like a mummy. Leave room at one end for the eyes. And you’ll want to leave part of the hot dog showing.
Spritz the air fryer basket with oil or use a parchment paper liner.
Place the mummy dogs in the basket, and air fry for 12 to 15 minutes at 350 degrees F.
Remove from the basket and attach the eyes by using ketchup or mustard as the โglueโ. If you don’t want to use the candy eyes just make dots for eyes with mustard or ketchup.
Oven Baked Halloween Mummy Hot Dogs
To make these in the oven, line a baking sheet with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Cook mummy dogs for 12-15 minutes or until they are golden brown.
Tips for Making and Serving
- Swap the crescent rolls for sheets of crescent dough or pizza dough if preferred.
- You can also make these smaller by cutting the hot dogs in half before wrapping with dough. These would make a cute appetizer.
- For a true mini size, you can use little smokies in place of the hotdogs.
- Try to avoid overlapping the dough too much or it won’t cook evenly and some dough parts may end up undercooked or raw.
- Do not add the eyes before cooking – they will melt in the cooking process.
- Donโt want to use candy eyes? Dot on ketchup or mustard with a toothpick after cooking.
- Do not overlap or stack the mummy dogs. Cook in batches if needed.
- To make ahead of time, wrap the dogs with dough and refrigerate until you are ready to cook.
- Serve with ranch, mustard, or ketchup as a dipping sauce.
- Mummy dogs are best eaten fresh but you can store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat in the air fryer for 3-5 minutes at 350 degrees F.

Air Fryer Mummy Dogs
Equipment
- Baking sheet for oven bake method
Ingredients
- 16 hot dogs
- 8 ounce can crescent roll dough
- candy eyeballs, optional
Instructions
- Remove hotdogs from packaging, pat dry and set aside.
- Remove crescent dough from the can. Unroll the dough but donโt separate the rolls. Pinch the perforations closed. Place dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll flat to 1/8โ thick.
- Cut the dough into thin strips using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, varying the widths between โ โ to ยผโ wide.
- Wrap each hotdog with different dough widths, mimicking a loose mummy wrap. The dough will expand slightly so be sure the hot dog is still visible after wrapping. You also want to leave space for the eyes at one end.
- Lightly spritz the basket with oil or use a parchment paper liner. Place the dough-wrapped hotdogs in the air fryer basket.
- Cook at 350 degrees F for 12-15 minutes or until the dough is cooked through and golden brown.
- Remove mummy dogs from the basket. Using ketchup or mustard as the โglueโ, place the candy eyes on the mummies. Let the eyes dry for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- Donโt overlap the dough too much or it may not cook through evenly.
- Dough substitutions: use a crescent dough sheet or pizza dough.
- Donโt stack or overlap the mummy dogs in the basket. They need air to circulate through to cook properly.
- If you donโt want to use candy eyeballs, use ketchup or mustard. Use a toothpick to dot the eyes on after cooking.
- Oven directions:ย preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Prepare as directed, up to cooking. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or spritz with non-stick spray. Place mummy dogs on baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through.
- Best served fresh but you can store leftovers in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Reheat in the air fryer for 3-5 minutes at 350 degrees F.
