I used to buy this tasty dip at the Murray cheese kiosk at my local Krogers grocery store. But dang, it’s gotten expensive! So, I came up with this copycat recipe and now I can enjoy this addictive cheese spread anytime a cheesy craving hits.

What is Jarlsberg Cheese?

It’s a semi-soft mild cheese with a nutty flavor, similar to Swiss cheese. Originating in Norway, it’s known for its smooth texture and signature holes.

This cheese melts beautifully, making it a great addition to dips, cheese boards and sandwiches. And it’s a versatile choice because the mild flavor complements a variety of ingredients.

Jarlsberg Cheese Dip Ingredients

  • Mayonnaise – binds the ingredients together
  • Dill pickle juice – adds a tangy and zesty flavor
  • Milk – helps to create a smooth consistency
  • Red onion – adds crunch and texture
  • Fresh chives for a mild fresh onion flavor
  • Jarlsberg cheese – has a unique nutty flavor

How to Make Kroger Jarlsberg Cheese Dip Recipe

In a medium bowl, mix the mayonnaise, pickle juice, and milk until smooth.

Stir in the chopped onion, chives, and shredded cheese, making sure everything is evenly coated.

You can serve the dip right away but I like to let it chill in the fridge for 30-60 minutes.

For a little extra flavor and garnish, sprinkle more chopped chives on top before serving.

Tips for Making Homemade Cheese Dip with Jarlsberg

  • Grate your own cheese for maximum creaminess. Pre-shredded cheese often contains anti-caking agents that can affect the texture.
  • Use fresh chives for the brightest taste.
  • Serve the dip at room temperature – allowing the dip to sit for a bit enhances the flavor and makes it easier to scoop.

Recipe Substitutions and Variations

  • Add chopped, cooked bacon for a smoky flavor.
  • For a spicy kick, add finely diced jalapenos or a couple of dashes of hot sauce.
  • If you don’t have fresh chives, you can substitute with chopped fresh parsley.
  • For a hot appetizer, heat the dip until bubbly in a 350 degree F oven.

Can I make this dip ahead of time?

Absolutely! This simple dip can be made a day ahead and is great for prepping before a busy party or game day.

Store the dip in an airtight container in the fridge. When ready to serve, you can enjoy it cold, or let it sit at room temperature for about a half hour before serving.

What to serve with Jalsberg Cheese Dip

This easy party appetizer goes well with the usual dippers like carrots, celery, bell peppers, tortilla chips, your favorite crackers or as part of a crudite board.  If you’re looking for an out-of-the-box idea, spread a decent amount on a grilled burger – it’s amazing!

It also pairs well with other game day foods like baked ranch pretzels, and air fryer chicken taquitos.

How to Store Leftover Jarlsberg Spread

Store your leftover dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. If you’re reheating it to serve warm, use short intervals in the microwave, stirring in between to prevent uneven heating.
