My family is always up for pizza, so I love finding new ways to serve those classic flavors. These Pepperoni Pinwheels are a favorite because they start with an easy homemade dough and are loaded with pepperoni and melty cheese.
One of the best things about this recipe is the homemade dough. Yes, you do have to let it rise, but the actual work is easy. And it’s totally worth the extra effort because that freshly baked pizza dough takes these pinwheels up a notch. If you need it on the table faster, I’ve included a couple semi-homemade options below.

We’re sharing tips to help you get the best results with this recipe. If you don’t need the tips, scroll to the bottom for the full recipe and a printable recipe card.
I love recipes that work for dinner or snacks, and these pepperoni rolls do both. Serve them for a quick meal, after-school snack, or add them to your game day or party spreads. Just put out some marinara or ranch for dipping and they’ll be gone fast.

Pepperoni Pinwheels Ingredients Needed
For the Dough
- Warm water – Aim for 120-130°F so you don’t kill the yeast.
- Granulated white sugar – Feeds the yeast and helps activate it.
- Active dry yeast – Make sure it’s fresh and not expired.
- Salt – For flavor.
- Olive oil – Extra virgin olive oil works well for a tender dough.
- All-purpose flour – Lightly spoon it into the measuring cup, then level it off with the backside of a knife.
For the Filling
- Cheese – Use shredded mozzarella, provolone, or a pizza cheese blend.
- Pepperoni – Try regular or mini slices, or thicker slices for a heartier bite.
- Parmesan cheese – Grated or shredded work best.
- Basil – Fresh or dried, or swap in Italian seasoning.
- Optional dipping sauces – Marinara, pizza sauce, or ranch dressing pair well.

How to Make Pepperoni Pizza Pinwheels
Combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast in a large mixing bowl and stir gently. Let it sit until the yeast becomes foamy.
Stir in the salt and olive oil.

Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms and pulls away from the bowl’s sides.
Remove the dough, lightly oil the bowl, then return the dough to the bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, then set it in a warm spot until the dough has doubled in size.

Heat the oven and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with cooking spray.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it into a long rectangle shape.

Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly across the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
Layer the pepperoni over the cheese, then roll the dough tightly from the long side, like a jelly roll.

Use a sharp knife or serrated knife to slice the dough into equal-sized rolls.
Transfer the pinwheels to the prepared baking sheet, placing them cut-side down.

Sprinkle Parmesan cheese and basil over the tops of the rolls.
Bake until the pinwheels are cooked through and lightly golden brown. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce if desired.
Tips for Making Pizza Pinwheels
- If you have a stand mixer this is the time to use it. If mixing by hand, add all the flour at once, then knead the dough by hand for 3 minutes.
- Let the dough rise fully so the pinwheels bake up soft and fluffy.
- For even baking, don’t overload the roll with filling or use wet toppings like fresh tomatoes.
- Make sure you roll the dough tightly, so the pinwheels hold their shape when sliced.
- Use a sharp knife for the cleanest cuts and to avoid squishing the dough.
Recipe Substitutions and Variations
- Dough: Use a store-bought pizza dough instead of homemade if you’re short on time. Most grocery stores carry fresh dough near the deli department.
- Meat: Swap regular pepperoni for cooked sausage, ground beef, or turkey pepperoni.
- Cheese: Freshly grated cheese will melt better than the pre-shredded kind.
- Seasoning: For more flavor, sprinkle garlic powder or Italian seasoning over the cheese layer.
What to Serve with Pepperoni Rolls
The most common dipping sauces are ranch dressing and warm marinara sauce, but if you want to level up the dip, try my Ranch Beer Cheese Dip or creamy Whipped Feta Dip. I like to pair them with a simple salad, sliced fruit, or raw veggies for a light dinner. How to Store Leftover Pepperoni Pizza Pinwheels
Store leftovers in an airtight container or tightly wrapped in foil for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. Reheat in the oven or air fryer at 350°F until warmed through.

Can I make homemade pizza pinwheels ahead of time?
Yes, you can make them up to a day in advance. Prep and slice the pinwheels, then tightly cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to bake.
Can I freeze pinwheels made with pepperoni?
Yes! Bake them first, cool completely, then freeze for up to 2 months. To reheat, bake the frozen rolls at 350°F until heated through.
Do I have to use homemade pizza dough?
Nope. While I prefer the homemade dough because it gives the best texture and flavor, store-bought pizza dough works well when you’re short on time. Let the dough come to room temperature so it’s easier to roll out.
Can I use crescent roll dough instead of pizza dough?
You can but the crescent dough creates a softer, flakier pinwheel. It’s a great shortcut if you want to skip making dough from scratch, though.
Keep this recipe handy for nights when everyone wants pizza, but you don’t want to order out. These pinwheels bake up golden, slice easily, and are always a hit with kids and adults.
